This past weekend promised to be a rockin’ one in Spokane. Does anyone remember a group called Orgy? They were big a little over four years ago while I was still in junior high, and they played on Friday at The Big Easy.

I wasn’t quite sure what to expect going into the show. Was my $20 going to waste? Purchasing tickets was a chore of its own. The doors were scheduled to open at 6:30 p.m., but tickets were nowhere to be found. Instead, I was herded into a line, where we waited until almost 7:30 p.m. before getting tickets.

When the doors opened, I found myself a seat in the balcony. After sitting through two painful opening acts, my patience started to wear thin. In between the second band, Still Light Projector, and Orgy, there was a block of about 45 minutes of nothing. Orgy eventually hit the stage, and all was well.

I have no real complaints about their set. Orgy played everything that I wanted to hear, and that was good enough for me.

After I recovered from the Orgy show I ventured back into Spokane the next day for a CD release party at The Big Dipper. I had never heard about this venue before, so I was a little sketchy.

From the moment I walked into the door, I felt welcomed. This venue is vastly different from The Big Easy, but in good ways. It’s more intimate, and I got the impression that they aimed to put on a good show.

For only $7, the crowd was treated to evening of eclectic sounds. There were four bands that spanned various genres of music, and I was impressed with all of them.

The party was for the Aaron Richner Band, a smooth blend of jazz and soft rock. I enjoyed their set, but my personal favorite of the night was a rock quartet from Hollywood called Echocast.

Echocast was like a blend of Radiohead and Tool. I liked them so much that I bought their album Where The Future Ends over the internet.

My experience at The Big Dipper was much more pleasant than my experience at the Big Easy. In my opinion, the CD release show was great. I intend on looking at The Big Dipper first if I’m bored on a weekend.

In fact, Thursday nights at the Dipper are free. From 3 p.m. to 10 p.m. you can enjoy live bands and much more. For more information, check out www.rawkonline.com.
